I consider myself as an international and interdisciplinary academic who is interested in improving the quality of higher education through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). Experiencing the both world, Western (mostly in the U.S.) and in Eastern (mostly in Japan), both as a student and as a teacher, I can see that the both world have much to learn from each other. Coming from the interdisciplinary field of communication and information sciences where the fields of communication, psychology, sociology, education, business, library science and computer science meet, I believe interdisciplinarity is essential to advance human knowledge.
Learning is a complex phenomenon. But, I believe student-centered learning and constructivistic learning is the way for anybody to truly learn (here learning means not merely remembering the facts, but being able to apply concepts in real situations to critically examine/evaluate them and to solve problems). And I also believe that the effective use of ICTs will enable such learning at home and in schools. I will continue to research and experiment the possibility of implementing such learning. |
