Overview

The application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in teaching and learning has the potential to shift the educational paradigm from “teacher-centered teaching” to “student-centered learning” which demands students’ active participation in learning while respecting their individual differences. However, in Japan, the cases of student-centered learning being actually implemented in the practices of teaching and learning are still rarely seen in higher education institutions in comparison to those in other developed countries. In this symposium, we have invited experts from U.S., U.K., Australia, Korea and Japan to present their views on the topic based on their actual experiences in implementing student-centered learning. It also aims to discuss how we can implement student-centered learning in higher education institutions in Japan.
